Support for children experiencing emotional or behavioural difficulties
Children don’t always have the words to explain what they are feeling. Emotional or behavioural changes can show up in different ways, such as increased anxiety, emotional outbursts, withdrawal, sleep difficulties, or changes in behaviour at home or school.
Parents often seek support when a child is struggling with big emotions, changes at home such as parental separation, difficulties at school, or when something feels “not quite right” but is hard to put into words.
Children communicate through play, behaviour and relationships as much as through words. What may appear as challenging behaviour or emotional distress is often a child’s way of expressing something they are finding difficult or overwhelming.
Counselling offers a safe space for children to express themselves in a way that feels natural and appropriate for their age, while helping parents better understand what their child may be communicating.
Work with children is offered using developmentally appropriate, play-based approaches. Sessions are carefully paced and tailored to the child’s age, needs and stage of development.
At the outset, parents or guardians are involved in an initial meeting to share background information and concerns. This helps create a clear picture of the child’s world and ensures the work is supportive and well-informed.
Parents continue to be involved in a supportive way throughout the process, while the child is given space to engage in counselling at their own pace in a calm and respectful environment.
If you have concerns about your child or feel that additional support may be helpful, you’re welcome to get in touch to discuss the next steps. An initial conversation can help explore what support may be most appropriate for your child and family.
